Drying-apparatus.-The heat introduced to the material to be dried causes the formation of steam, which is continuously circulated through a superheater and back to the drying-chamber. The material is fed into a fixed drum b by a conveyer h, and is agitated by means of beaters e mounted on a shaft f. A sieve z is provided to prevent dust &c. from being drawn into the drying-chamber. The drying is started by circulating hot air from the heater a by means of a fan c. Steam is produced, and continues the operation. The pressure obtained may be utilized for driving low-pressure turbines &c., or the excess steam may be used for heating and drying, for example in a chamber v. The process may be carried through with hot air, in which case a flap valve i in the pipe o is turned through an angle of ninety degrees, opening ports k, l. Fresh air is sucked in at l, and after passing through the heater a and the drum b escapes at k. The material is discharged from the right-hand end of the drum b so that its movement is opposite to the direction of circulation of the gases.
