12,368. Lehmann, A. May 28. Current meters.-A lowreading ammeter or voltmeter for testing secondary batteries has a long tapering coil c wound on a bobbin b in which moves a mild-steel plunger f, controlled by a spring y connected to an adjustable set - screw i. The bobbin is fixed inside a metal casing a, which is connected to one end of the coil and forms one terminal of the instrument, the other end of the coil passing out through an ebonite plug j and cover j<1>. A pointer k is attached to the plunger and moves over a vertical scale. Two pointers may be used so as to balance the plunger. In a volt-meter, a few turns are added to the lower part of the coil, so as to prevent the sensitiveness of the instrument from falling off too rapidly. In a combined ammeter and voltmeter, two coils are wound on the same bobbin. Energy meters.-A watt-meter of this type may have two tapered coils.
