Abstract

11,763. Smellie, T. May 21. Ventilators.-A ventilator for buildings, and for railway or other carriages, consists of a metal, terra-cotta, brick, or wooden casing, which is divided by a middle vertical partition E and has at the bottom an aperture fitted with a grating open to the space to be ventilated. Deflectors F inclined in opposite directions are fitted in both halves of the casing over the bottom aperture. Flap valves V, of mica, silk, aluminium, or the like, are hung below the deflectors, so that when no air current is passing in the ventilator the valves hang vertically and allow vitiated air to issue from the room ; but when an air current is passing in either direction, the valves are closed against an inclined framework in one half of the ventilator and a current of air is induced in the other half of the ventilator, from the room, thus opening the valves to their full extent against stops S. In buildings having two or more floors, in addition to being fitted in the roof, ventilators are also fitted between the joists, which are so connected to the outer wall as to allow the passage of an air current.
