Hats, caps, helmets, &c. are ventilated by providing them with a projecting pad of cork &c. mounted upon a metal holder secured so that a space is left between the head and the head covering. As applied to a hat having a sweat band, the pad d, Figs. 1 and 3, of resilient material is held between claws c upon a metal plate a formed with a tongue b which can be slipped behind the sweat band. As applied to head coverings without sweat bands, for example caps, a circular piece of resilient material such as spongy india-rubber d, Figs. 4 and 5, is secured to a circular slotted plate g by means of the split shank f<1>, and the circular plate is secured to the cap by means of the prongs j which form the ex tremities of a wire which is sprung into a circula lip i around the periphery of the plate.
