Pressure-regulating valves; lift valves; ball-andfloat valves; actuating valves.-An automatic valve for governing steam-engines, air-compressors, and for other purposes comprises a screw-down mushroom valve m, Fig. 1, and a cylindrical seating h which slides to and from the valve m automatically, thereby controlling the passage of fluid. The seating is spanned by a bar k through which the spindle of the mushroom valve slides freely. The seating h is connected to a rod n which passes out through a stuffing-box and is counected to a lever x, Fig. 2, which is mounted on a bracket p at the side of the casing. The lever x is connected to a rod t provided with a piston u working in a cylinder v. A spring E on the rod t is confined between an abutment s and an adjustable collar d<1>. The fulcrum of the lever x can be varied by means of an adjustable bracket A and holes C. By connecting the pipe z of the cylinder v to the outlet side of the valve, a reducing-valve is obtained, and when thus used for supplying steam to steam-engines, the valve governs the speed of the engine when under a constant load. When used in connexion with an air-compressor; if the pipe z is connected to the airreceiver, the valve controls the compression. By dispensing with the cylinder v and connecting the rod t to a centrifugal governor, the valve is adapted to govern the speed of a steam-engine under varying loads. By connecting the rod t to a float, the valve can be utilized to control the supply of feedwater to the boilers, or to control the inlets to tanks or reservoirs.
