Abstract
1811. Byrom, J., and Glynn, W. T. Jan. 24. Springs.-The vibrations of motor-car and other road-vehicle bodies upon their axles are damped by a dash-pot in which the flow of liquid from one side of a piston to the other is more rapid as the body and axle approach than when they recede from each other, such damping action being supplemented by air cushions provided within the top of the cylinder and on the under-side of the piston ; the pressure of the air forming the cushions is above that of the atmosphere. A cylinder A is closed by covers B and contains a piston E, the rod D of which passes through cup-leathers F, G, the flow of liquid taking place through side passages H, J fitted respectively with a regulating valve I and a non-return ball valve K, the rise of the latter being regulated by a screw stop L. The liquid is preferably oil, and compressed air is provided in spaces N, M below the top cover B and the piston, respectively, an inlet valve 0 being provided for the attachment of an air-pump. The openings to the passages H, J are arranged to be closed by the piston before it completes its stroke, so that the stroke is terminated by the air cushions. The apparatus is mounted between the body and axle by ball or universal joints formed at the upper end of the piston-rod and at the lower end of the cylinder. In modifications, the non-return valve K may be arranged in the piston as shown in Fig. 4, the passage J extending downwards so as to preserve the air space M ; or the pipe J and valve K may be arranged as a by-pass upon the pipe H. Again, the passage H may be formed through the piston-rod as shown in Fig. 5, the operating-rod for the valve I extending to the upper end of the piston-rod.
