Incandescent lamps. - Supports for metal filaments are arranged so as to enclose the central stem on which they are mounted and thus prevent the free limbs of the filament from coming in contact therewith. One such arrangement is shown in Fig. 2, which is a plan view of the upper of two groups of supports each carried by a disk on the central stem. The loops a, of thoria, magnesia, &c. are carried by rods c, mounted tangentially to the disk e by drops of glass d and short wires. Each loop holds one limb of a filament b, the other limb being held by a loop of the lower group. Each group of holders may be replaced by a shaped piece of difficultly fusible material, such as thoria, made in one piece by stamping or pressing.
