Abstract

29,286. Boult, A. J., [Norddeutsche Wollkõmmerei und Kammgarnspinnerei]. Dec. 22. Combing-machines, Heilmann type. The nipper jaws b and the delivery device d are fixed in position, the combing being effected by an oscillating sickle-shaped arm a provided with pins, the uppermost rows of which may be reversed in inclination so as to comb the top side of the projecting tuft of fibres on the return stroke of the combing- arm. The sliver to be combed passes through a feed-grating c with gills, which is advanced to feed the end between the open nippers b. The nippers then grip the fibres, and the combing-arm a is oscillated by a crank-disk, rods, and levers to comb the projecting end, while the feed-grating with the gills withdrawn moves back over the sliver. The jaws then open for a further feed, and the cleaned end is received and drawn forward by the delivery device d, a comb e being lowered into the fibres to clean the rear ends. The delivery roller d is mounted between rollers d<1>, d<2> to give additional stiffness, and these together with the comb e are mounted on a carriage f adjustable on the frame to suit the length of fibre under treatment. The delivery roller d is driven from a shaft I by elliptic and spur gear so as to rotate quickest when drawing forward the cleaned end. The combing-arm a is oscillated by a pivoted lever h rocked from a crankdisk on the shaft I, and carrying a block which slides on an arm i fixed to the combing-arm. This mechanism effects a quick movement of the comb during combing, and a slow motion while it is being cleaned by the brushes l, l' and the delivery device is drawing off the cleaned fibres. The top comb e is actuated by a lever 8 oscillated by a cam on the shaft I. The feed-grating c is carried by a pivoted lever 10, which is formed with an arm 11 and rocked towards and from the nippers by an arm 12 and bell-crank lever 9 from a cam on the shaft I, the lever 9 also serving to raise and lower the gill working through the feed-grating.
