Abstract

28,977. Whitham, F. E. Dec. 19. Sewage and foul waters, treating; settling.-Solid matters are separated from liquids, such as sewage, effluents from coal-washing machines, paper pulp, &c., by passing them through a series of chambers in which eddies are formed. Liquid supplied to the tank E, Fig. 4, through the trough C and openings D passes under the division plate F and enters the settling compartments A. These compartments have narrow inlets and connecting- channels B, Fig. 1, so that the liquid is directed against hollowed-out or curved wings H attached to a division plate G. Under the influence of the eddies set up, the solids settle and pass down vertical tubes L to hoppers M, which are provided with nozzles N delivering to troughs or conveyers P. The deposits are graded in the several rows of chambers. Floating matter separated in front of the plate F passes away through an opening K and trough J. Fig. 5 shows modified apparatus in which the liquid passes-up through vertical chambers A provided with sets of inclined plates S and curved plates U. The solids fall to the hopper M through openings Y and vertical chambers R.
