Kilns. - Relates to the arrangement of flues in a gasfired muffle kiln for firing or drying ceramic and similar wares, and to means for heating the air for combustion by passing it through goods previously fired. Beneath the floor of the kilns are arranged dampered branch gas flues s 3, 4, 5 connected with the main gas flue 1, and dampered b r a n c h air flues 10, 11, 12 connected with the main air flue 9. In the form shown, each of the branch air and gas flues is provided with three outlets communicating with the vertical flues 23, 29, 37, respectively. Products of combustion pass around e a c h kiln through the flues 23, 24, 25, and then enter a vertical flue 26 and pass over the kiln, and finally escape through a flue 28 to a branch 30 of the chimney flue. The products entering the flues 29, 37 pass in a similar manner to the chimney flue. From the vertical. flues 23, 29, 37, combustion products are delivered to the spaces 25, 33, 40 beneath the floor through. openings 44, 45, 46, respectively. The air for combustion may be heated in a regenerator (not shown) arranged in the chimney flue. Dampered flues 53, 52 connect two kilns with a vertical flue 49, which is connected at its lower end with the air flue 9. Similarly-arranged flues. 56, 55 are provided for the adjoining kiln. When the goods are cooling, air is admitted at the lower part of each kiln through a dampered opening 59 and, after passing through openings in a wall 61 and through the goods, escapes through the flue at the upper part, and down the vertical flue to the main air flue 9. When desired, heat may be allowed to escape from the upper parts of the combustion chambers through outlets 64 normally covered by slabs.
