Abstract

27,031. Audsley, J. E. Nov. 28. Tyres, pneumatic &c.-To form a tyre cover or a protective band therefor, canvas is slightly heated and impregnated with a solution of gutta-percha or balata, or a mixture of these and rubber, and is passed in front of, or between heated rollers to enable the solution to penetrate the canvas and bind the weft and warp together. The canvas, after being dried by passing it over rolls, is reheated, folded over one ply at a time, and passed through rolls until the desired thickness, three or more plies, is obtained. In some cases, the plies may be further secured together by thread or wire stitching. One of the surfaces of the material thus formed may have rolled upon it a layer of plastic gutta-percha, mixed or not with rubber. In the form shown in Fig. 2, a band a of the material is solutioned to the tread of the tyre. In another form, the band is solutioned in a dovetailed groove in the tread of the tyre. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the tyre cover is built up entirely from the material. The material may be placed between the air-tube and the ordinary outer cover of a tyre.
