Abstract

26,200. Barnes, E. A. Nov. 19. Punching-pliers. - A device for perforating cheques, scrip, &c. so as to prevent fraudulent alteration, but also applicable to punching generally, consists of a hand-punch which is adapted to form double rows of perforations as t, Fig. 9, and single rows as v, u, w, the perforations being so formed that each word or amount written on a cheque is closely surrounded by perforations so arranged that the writing on the cheque cannot be altered without detection. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the jaws a, b of the punch have a parallel motion, and the lower jaw b is formed with two rows of punches e, the end ones i of one row of which are longer than the others. The jaw a is formed with slits c, d, and, when a double row of perforationst is to be formed, the cheque is placed in the slit c and all the punches act on the paper. If, however, a small single row of perforations as v, u, w is to be made, the cheque is placed in the slit d and only the punches i arc operative. The parts of the jaw a are formed with holes through which the punches work, and the jaw a may be divided into two parts instead of three. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the jaws and punches are arranged as shown, and a double row of perforations can be punched by the punches e, i, of unequal length, but when a slide k is moved so as to engage a projection m on the upper handle, only the punches i are operative and a single row may be punched. The jaws a, bare kept apart by springs, and the jaws are so formed that the paper not to be acted on may be curled up into a recess j. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the punches e are arranged transversely to the hinged jaws a, b, and these punches form the double row of perforations. The single row of punches is arranged above the jaw b, and these punches coact with holes on a spring arm o. This form is adapted to facilitate perforating parts remote from the edges of the paper. Variations may be made in the three forms of construction shown by adapting the features of one modification to the construction of another modification; for example, the spring arm o, Fig. 6, may be applied to the arm a, Fig. 4. The punches used may be adjustable.
