Abstract
25,916. Leon, K. O. Nov. 16. Buoys.-Relates to means for maintaining a submarine mine, submerged buoy, or the like at a constant depth below the surface in a tideway, and is described with reference to a contact-mine having an anchored main body a, Fig. 1, containing the explosive charge and detonator, and a contact buoy f, Fig. 2, containing the device for closing the firing circuit when the buoy f is struck by a passing vessel. The mine a and buoy f are connected by a cable h wound on to a drum d in the mine a. The drum is rotated to wind or unwind the cable, and so to lower or raise the buoy f, by a motor b supplied with current from a battery on shore. The circuit is closed, so as to drive the motor in the required direction, through pivoted spring contact-arms 19, 20, Fig. 3, and fixed contacts 21, 22, 23, located in a box 15, when the diaphragm 16 closing the bottom of the box, or other device affected by the external water pressure and controlling the contact-arms 19, 20, is moved from its normal position by an increase or decrease in the water pressure due to the state of the tide. An electro-magnetic device, controlled from the shore, is also provided for actuating the contact-arms 19, 20 when it is desired to lower the buoy to allow a friendly vessel to pass.
