Glue.-Relates to plant for treating fish offal and the like for the production of oil, glue, and fertilizers, of the type wherein the material is cooked by steam and is afterwards drained, pressed, and dried. The fish is treated with stationary jets of highpressure steam while passing in a continuous manner through a suitable container, the oil and other liquid being continuously drawn off. The apparatus comprises a rotary cooker combined or not with a drying-chamber and with a press, whereby the material is transferred from the cooker to the drying-chamber. The cooker consists of an inner perforated revolvable drum a, an outer imperforate revoluble drum b, and a stationary steampipe c provided with branch pipes c<1>. The drum a is formed with a spiral conveyer blade f whereby the material is carried past the stationary steam jets, and may also have longitudinal lifting-blades. The oil, glue liquor, &c. escape into the outer drum b and are discharged through the pipe g<3>. The ends of the drum a are rendered fluid-tight in a suitable manner, the inlet end being connected to a stationary feed-hopper e containing a conveyer d and provided or not with a slicing-device. The perforations may be smaller in size towards the outlet end of the drum. A drying-chamber m surrounding the cooking-drum; wherein the material is treated with hot air, may also be provided. The chamber m may be stationary or may revolve with or separately from the cooker. A steam jacket o. surrounding the drum b may be used for heating purposes, and longitudinal lifting-ribs m<3>, o<3> may be provided. When the chamber is stationary, it is provided with a screw conveyer or with an agitating- device carried by the rotating drum b, and with an external heating-flue. The press used for removing the residual oil and liquor from the material before passing it from the cooker to the drying-chamber is also constructed to allow of continuous action. Thus a screw press may be used, or a special press comprising three perforated cylinders p containing plungers r may be provided. These cylinders are mounted in a frame q<1> which intermittently rotates through an angle of 120 degrees, the plungers r being so actuated that the material is successively filled from the cooker into the pressing-cylinder, then compressed therein, and finally discharged into the drying-drum. The rotation of the frame q<1> is effected by means of suitable gearing driven by a shaft s<9>, to which an intermittent rotary motion is imparted by a loose wheel s<3> through the intermediary of a clutch s<7> operated by a cam s<8>. Compression and ejectment of the material is effected by means of two steam or hydraulic rams t acting on the plungers r, the supply and discharge of motive fluid being controlled by slide valves v<3> actuated by a lever w controlled by the cam s<8>. A steam-chest having low and high pressure compartments u<1>, u<2> for withdrawing and advancing the rams t is employed. The inlet to the drying-chambers m may be provided with a knife-edged grid to cut up the entering material.
