Abstract

24,947. Horton, E. Nov. 6. Feeding sheets.-In a machine for making boxes or baskets, two rectangular blanks of wood veneer or like material are lifted from piles of blanks and are placed crossways, one on the other, on a carrier which conveys them beneath a square form. The blanks, after being bent to form the box, are held together by strengthening-strips wound round the rim of the box. The blanks referred to are shown at X, Fig. 33, in two receptacles 17, 18, from which they are drawn off by two pickers 55, 56, which are mounted on rods 28, 29 having a spring driving-connexion with the vertically-reciprocating rod 21 driven from the toothed wheel 50 on the main shaft 1. The pickers 55, 56 have pivoted to them levers carrying needles which are forced into the top blanks in the receptacles 17, 18. When the picker 55 is raised, a projection on the rod 28 turns the lever 140, this movement causing the release of a spring-pressed pivoted gripper 129, Figs. 20 and 33, which grips the blank against the upper gripper 127. The toothed bar 125 upon which the grippers are mounted is reciprocated by a toothed segment 123 driven from the toothed bar 118, the latter being reciprocated by the crank-pin 76 on the disk 77. When the grippers 127, 129 have brought the blank over the die-box 88, the nut 133 strikes the stop 132, thereby turning the gripper 129 and allowing the blank to fall between the guide-plates 103, 103'. Immediately after this, the needles of the picker 56 are withdrawn from the blank they support, and this blank falls cross-ways upon the other, over the die-box. The bar 118 upon which the die-box is mounted is then moved to the right to bring the die-box beneath the form. The mechanism by which the strengthening-strips referred to are fed into the machine is shown in Figs. 16 and 19. Two piles of the strips Y are stored beneath weights 159 free to slide upon rods 158 arranged on opposite sides of the spindle 165 upon which the form is mounted. The rods 158 are rocked on their axes, and each carries a separator 171 and discharger 172. One end of the lowest blank of each pile is deflected downwards by one of a pair of vertically-reciprocating rods 168 pivoted with needles 170. The separator 171 enters between the two lowest strips, and, after the plunger 177 has disengaged the lowest strip from the needles 170, the discharger 172 causes the strip to slide over curved guides 176 into the path of the plunger 261, which feeds the strip to the form. The previously-described mechanism for transferring the blanks from the picker 55 to the guideplates 103, 103<1>, Fig. 20, may be replaced by the mechanism shown in Fig. 28. When the picker 55 rises, it strikes the levers 149, which turn the plates 150 into an horizontal position beneath the blank. As soon as the picker has released the blank, a plunger pushes the latter forward till it meets the stop 102, Fig. 20.
