24,068. Fell, J. C., [Union Typewriter Co.]. Oct. 29. Typewriters.- Relates to tabulating-mechanism for typewriters. The denomination stops 44, which co-operate with the adjustable column stops 43 on the carriage 12, consist of the upper forwardly-extending ends of a series of upright levers 45, arranged closely together at the back of the machine and actuated by central parallel push-rods 80 from keys 64 spaced at any desired distance apart across the machine behind the ordinary keyboard. The levers 45 are pivoted on a cross-rod 49 of a framework 46 attached to the machine framing by screw bolts 52, 55 passing through screw plugs 51,54 for vertical adjustment. The levers 45 are guided at the upper end by a slotted plate 50, and play at the lower end in grooves in a cross-bar 56. A spring 59 bears behind each lever 45 below the pivot 49. The keys 64 are on levers 65 fast to rock-shafts 66, which are shown as hollow shafts mounted on rods secured by set-screws 76 in side brackets 75 and a central bracket 72 on a frame 67 attached to the machine framing by screws 68, 70. The key-levers 65 pass through a comb plate 71 forming the front cover-plate of the machine. Each shaft 66 is provided with an arm 78 to actuate the push-rod 80 for the corresponding lever 45. The push-rods 80 lie at the rear in the grooves in the cross-bar 56, and at the front in grooves 79 in the frame 67, The levers 45 and arms 78 are notched to prevent the push-rods 80 from being raised out of the grooves. The arms 78 are made progressively longer, and the shafts 66 are at corresponding levels to compensate for the different lengths of the key-levers 65. The machine shown is provided with sub-levers 31 upstanding in the path of the push-rods 80, which are spaced to pass between the sub-levers 31, and are slightly fanned inwards to the narrower arrangement of the levers 45 ; otherwise the push-rods 80 could be straight. The column stops 43 aie of inverted U -shape, and are slipped over a grooved tabulator bar 40 from the top. The bar 40 is mounted on brackets 41 on the carriage 12, and the brackets 8 carrying the upper carriage rail 9 are arched for the passage of the bar 40 and stops 43. For carriage release when tabulating, a rack-lifter 96 is provided in connexion with a universal bar 82 situated behind the levers 45. An arm 89, extending from the universal bar 82, carries a headed pin 90 engaging with a slotted link 91 pivoted to a lever 92 carrying the racklifter 96. The link 91 is adjustable in length, the lower section 95 screwing on the upper section, and it is preferred to adjust the section 95 so that there is sufficient lost motion to ensure that the tabulator stop is in position before the carriage is released.
