Abstract
22,725. Brunner, E. Oct. 15. Air supply, heating.-Air supplied for secondary combustion is heated in tubes arranged in the furnace flues or in the ash-pit, and is subjected to the direct heat of the furnace fire. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the air is heated in tubes D which pass through the side flues, back through the main flue, and under the grate, and is delivered at the front of the furnace through nozzles d'. The tube may be placed on a level with the firebars, or it may pass along the crown of the furnace. In a modified form, the tube passes from the rear of the furnace and through the main flue. As applied to a locomotive or vertical-boiler furnace, the air-beating tubes D are placed wholly in the ash-pit, as shown in Fig. 5, and the upper portions may serve as fire-bars, or ordinary fire-bars may be used. The air may be delivered both at the front and back of the furnace.
