Abstract

21,101. Cramp, E., and Cramp, W. Sept. 22. Safety suspending-apparatus.-Relates to safety suspending-apparatus for mine, hoist, and lift cages, of the type in which gripping-levers or eccentrics are connected with the hoisting-mechanism, so that if the hoisting chain breaks, the levers or eccentrics grip the guide-ropes, and comprises a spec'al arrangement of parts and a particular formation of gripping-lever. Fig. 1 shows the mechanism in elevation, Fig. 5 being a plan of the gripping-device. Attached to the frame 3 of the cage are one or more pairs of guides 1, U- shaped in plan and partly surrounding the guideropes 5. Between the jaws of each guide 1 is pivoted a lever 8, the inner end of which is connected by a chain 10 to a bar 11 suspended from the hoisting-chain. The smooth outer ends of the levers are shaped to fit the guide-rope, but normally hang clear thereof. If the hoisting-chain breaks, the lever 8 is swung over by the spring 17, and its outer end grips the guide-rope and suspends the cage. The weight of the cage increases the grip of the levers. The spring 17 may be replaced by a counterweight, and rods may be used in place of the chains 10. When the weight of the cage is taken by the props at the bottom of the shaft, the levers 8 do not grip the guide-ropes.
