Abstract

Sights and methods of sighting.- An auxiliary telescopic or other sight A, Fig. 1, for use in connexion with the training-gear, is mounted upon a stem a in a socket b<2> on a quadrant B pivoted at c to a standard C, which is attached to the floor or other part of the gun - platform or turret and is entirely independent of the gun. The quadrant is guided upon the standard C by a flange b<1> and is provided with a rack b, so that by means of the handwheel D and gearing d', d, b the sight may be levelled. The stem a is connected at its lower end to a deflexionarm E, shown in plan in Fig. 4. The arm E is separately adjusted for drift and for speed of ship, wind pressure, &c., the former adjustment being made by rotating the handle e<8> on the drift dial E<2>, whereby the spindle e<3> is caused to screw into, or out of, the thread e' in the bracket bx, the worm e<1> being thus moved in an axial direction without rotation. The second adjustment is made by rotating the deflexion dial E', which is connected by a rectangular boss e<15> to the sleeve e' of the worm e<1>. A device, consisting of a sleeve e<10> having a finger e" engaged in a slot e<12>, prevents frictional rotation of the worm e<1> when the dial E' is rotated. In modifications, the dial E<2> is connected by a rack-and-pinion device to the spindle e<3>, the quadrant B is inverted or arranged in a substantially horizontal position, or the quadrant is dispensed with and the sight and deflexion arm are mounted upon a carrier which is traversed by a rack-and-pinion upon a curved guide on the standard C.
