Abstract

18,570. Lake, H. H., [Submarine Signal Co.]. Aug. 18. Signals, marine.-In sound-producing apparatus for submarine signalling, the resonant body comprises a closed case, within which the vibrationexciting mechanism is placed. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the case B, having a thickened ring E, encloses the hammer F, which is pivotally connected by a link G to a rod 0<1> having a collar O<2> normally resting upon the armature C of the magnet C. When the armature. is attracted, the hammer F is thrown into the position shown, its momentum allowing it to strike the ring E before the spring S returns the rod 0<1> to its normal position. The resonating-portion B is connected to the main casing by a hollow neck B' of restricted diameter. The line-wires J are connected to the wires W in the junction box M, which is then filled with a waterproof insulating-compound. Fig. 2 shows a gas buoy, in which the passage of the gas to the lamp- N actuates suitable mechanism to reciprocate the rod G<1>, connected by a pin and slot o<5> to the hammer lever H, pivoted at h. When the rod G<1> moves the lever H slightly beyond its centre position, the spring C<1> completes the stroke, the momentum of the hammer F causing it to overcome the leaf springs S<1>, S<2>, which prevents it remaining in contact with the rim E. Fig. 4 shows a form of sound-producing apparatus in which the alternate energization of the magnets C<2>, C<3> causes the case B to vibrate.
