Abstract
18,268. Kruse, P. Aug. 14. Cans; soldering. - A machine for soldering the vent-holes in the heads of metal cans, and also for unsoldering to discharge impurities, has a travelling belt 3 carrying the cans 4. The belt passes along a channel in a fixed disk 5, supported on a central standard &c., and is driven by chain gearing from the shaft 6. The disk 5 is provided with a circular guideway 17 for the cans, which are moved by a spider 10 rotated on a fixed shaft 9 by bevel-gearing from the main shaft 6. This spider has an irregular periphery, and to it are secured, by bolts and slots 12, plates 11 with vertical flanges 13, to enable different sizes of cans to be operated on. The cans, which move on the belt between guides 14, 14 adjustable horizontally and vertically according to the size of the can, force back a hinged spring-pressed gate 16 and are received by the revolving spider. The tops of the cans and vent-openings then first pass under one or more wipers or cleaners 18, and are then passed under the soldering-irons 21. These irons are formed on rods 22, Fig. 4, pivoted to vertically-adjustable standards 23 fixed on the spider, and their other ends are formed as balls &c. 25 to move round a vertically-adjustable fixed cam 26, which raises them to contact with a spring-pressed pivoted cleaner 31, dips them in the solder pot 19, which is heated by a jet 19, and lowers them to the venthole, where they remain until just before the cans are discharged by a guide 14 on to the belt, the track 29 being bevelled to raise the cans and retain them in contact with the irons and reduce friction. The irons are then caused to enter a chamber 30 with open top and ends, heated by fixed burners or any form of heater 30. The heat from the jet 19 passes through a chamber 20 beneath the solder pot 19, Fig. 12, and escapes up the sides of the pot. The solder may be applied in the form of a wire and fed by mechanical means, and the irons may be depressed on the cans, or these may be raised instead of both operations being effected.
