Toboganning; railways for recreation.-An apparatus for amusement consists of a track E, Fig. 1, formed with a series of undulations F which extends from the top of a structure A' formed of iron girders to a bed of sand, or a mattress G, or to a return slide. The structure A' is covered with a roof B and is formed with a starting-floor C which is reached by means of an ordinary staircase H or by a moving platform I driven from a motor contained within the structure A', or a stairway J is formed in two parts j, j<1>, which are given reciprocating motions in opposed directions either up and down, or to and fro, by means of links and cams or eccentrics. A lift P may also be provided. The track E is formed of matched boarding, metal, indurated paper pulp, celluloid, &c. It may be waxed and polished, and is supported by girders and timbers. The persons sit on the track with or without mattresses or coracles 0, Fig. 5, formed with wicker bodies and with handles o, and foot-straps o<1>. The undulations F may extend in a straight line across the track, or if it is desired that the coracles should descend in a zigzag course, transverse undulations may be formed in the waves F, this construction. making collisions probable. Advertisements may be placed on the walls of the structure A', and the inside of the structure may be used for rifle ranges, vending-machines, refreshments, entertainments, &c.
