The seam shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises four needle threads 1, 2, 3, 4, four under or hook threads 6, 7, 8, 9, and a surface thread 5. The under threads pass through the loops of the needle threads, and are spread out in triangular form to encircle the next needle loops in their own and the adjacent inner rows. In this way, the inner threads 7, 8 cross the join, and the outer threads hold the inner threads to prevent them from being pulled through the edges of the material. Fig. 6 shows one side of a seam in which only two under threads 5, 6 are used, while in that shown in Fig. 10 there are no under threads.
