Sprinklers, automatic; alarms, fire.-Sprinklers of the expanding-capsule type are provided with means, which may consist of spring-pressed rods acting against the valve stem, for retarding the opening and closing of the valve. Fig. 1 shows the application of one form of the invention to the sprinkler described in Specification No. 5237, A.D. 1906, comprising a capsule A, a main valve B, and a supplementary valve E adapted to be opened in advance of the main valve. Fixed in the casing A<1> is a plate G, provided with a slot G<2> and a flat spring H, fastened to the plate by a screw H'. A member I, pivoted at I<1>, passes through the slot G<2> and carries a sliding rod J, acted upon a spring J<1> and formed with a notch J<2>, which engages the shoulder of the stem A<2> of the capsule A. When the capsule expands with sufficient force, the shoulder on the stem A<2> slips past the notch J<2> and the member I is tilted, its corner I' pressing against the spring H, which thus retards the movement of the stem A<2>. The rod J pres iog against the stem A<2> retards the closing of the valve when the temperature falls. The tension of the spring H can be varied by varying the position of bolts K, which are adapted to slide in slots cut through the plate G and spring H. A helical spring A<6> is fitted between the spring H and the capsule, which is provided with projecting-plates A', A<5>. The tilting of the member I brings together two electric contacts Q, P to sound an a'arm.
