Abstract

Diving.-Relates to a water-tight detachable coupling of the plug type for telephonic or other cables particularly applicable to the apparatus described in Specification No. 28,749, A.D. 1904, for the use of divers and other persons working in an irrespirable atmosphere. The seat a formed in the saddle l embracing the cable, or the diver's airpipe b containing the conductors f embedded therein, are formed with a series of insulated contact sockets c connected respectively to the conductors f. The removable part of the coupling consists of a vulcanite disk g formed integral with the short coupling length h of the cable bridging the joint between consecutive sections of the cable or airpipe. Tapered coiled spring contacts e project from the disk g and are adapted to engage the sockets c. The two parts are secured together by the nut n engaging a threaded stud m on the saddle l. The seat a is provided with a facing d of rubber, leather, or the like, which engages with annular ribs o, o<1> of similar material on the disk g, so as to prevent access of water to the contacts c, e. The seating is provided with an annular coaming q embracing the disk g and provided with an aperture through which the neck r of the cable coupling length h passes, thus ensuring correct registry of the contacts. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of a pair of lateral walls separated by gaps, for the same purpose as the coaming q.
