Rail joints of the type in which fish-plates have bearing-surfaces to bridge the gap between the adjacent rail ends, are constructed to allow relative vertical movement between the rail ends and the tread fish-plate. Fig. 1 shows one construction in which the tread fish-plate b is approximately of rail-section, and is secured rigidly by bolts d to the main rails a immediately above the adjacent sleepers. A metal packing-piece c, shown separately in Fig. 3, fits closely against the heads and feet of the rails immediately above the sleepers e, but has part of the intermediate portion g cut away, so that it only bears against the webs of the rails near their extreme ends, and thus allows the rail-ends to move relatively to the fish-plates b. Other short packing-pieces f are fitted at each end of the packing-piece c. In some cases, the packing-piece f may be made the same length as the piece c. Fig. 7 shows a joint on the same principle with a tread fish-plate band packing-piece c of modified section, interposed between the fishplate b and an ordinary fish-plate. In this case, the rail a and both the ordinary fish-plates move relatively, to the tread fish-plate. Fig. 9 shows a tread fish-plate b, of railsection, which has a lateral extension b<1> extending over the feet of the rails. Short packing-pieces c' are interposed between the foot of each rail and the extension b<1>, immediately above the adjacent sleepers. The packing-pieces c<1> may be omitted, in which case the tread fishplate is arched or recessed at the centre of its lower surface and the ends of the flange b<1> bear directly upon the feet of the rails. Any one of the sections of tread fish-plate shown may be used in any of the joints, and other slight modifications in the arrangement and form of the packing-pieces are shown in the Specification.
