Abstract

9164. Petersson, A. J. April 18, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Electric furnaces.-An arc furnace for treating gases comprises a chamber 1, Fig. 1, a central electrode 5, an outer electrode 2, and an annular electro-magnetic device 7 for producing rotation of the arc. The gases pass through the chamber in a direction parallel to its axis. The outer electrode 2 may have the form of a helix, or of a complete or broken ring, and is preferably hollow in order to admit of cooling. A straight or curved arm 6 of the central electrode 5 facilitates the starting of the arc. The electro - magnetic device 7 may consist of a coil or of a spiral ribbon - shaped conductor carrying a large current; in the latter case, the innermost turn of the conductor may serve as the outer electrode. Iron may be used to complete the magnetic circuit outside the furnace. In one arrangement for the purpose, the coil 7 is enclosed by two iron rings, which together have a U-shaped section. Fig. 12 shows another magnetic arrangement, consisting of plates 13, 14, which have circular central apertures and are united by cores wound with coils 11. The apparatus may be so arranged that the field diminishes towards the centre of the chamber, in accordance with the diminution in velocity of the arc. The current used in the arc and in the coils may be either alternating or direct, and the coils may serve as inductances in series with the arcs.
