Abstract

7960. Miller, T. April 2. Moulding boots and shoes.-Relates to an apparatus for moulding rubber &c. soles, heels, and foxing-strips on to canvas or other shoes such as are used for tennis, yachting, &c., and securing them in place by vulcanization of the rubber while under great pressure. It consists of a mould 10 Figs. 2 and 3, made in one piece and having the same contour as the complete sole 13, heel 12, and foxing-strip 14, while further it is constructed so that the lasted shoe when in position fits closely along the line 15. This mould rests on a steamchest 2, which itself rests on, or is made in one piece with, the table 1, while the last 17 is yieldingly supported above the mould by a tension screw 6 adapted to work through a yoke 5. A number of moulds may be fitted in the one press. The shoe is lasted in the usual way, while the sole blank may bs cut to the exact shape required and the foxing-strip laid round the sole and upper in the mould ; or the sole may be cut larger and bevelled off as at 19, Fig. 5, to form the foxing- strip ; or, further, it may be cut of sufficient thickness so that the extra stock will flow round the vamp to form the foxing-strip. When the pressure is applied, the lasted shoe fits the line 15 of the mould so closely that the rubber is forced through the material of the vamp, and a firm cohesion of the various parts is obtained. In making rubber shoes, the heel, sole, and foxing- strip may be first moulded and partly vulcanized, then cemented to the upper, and the whole completely vulcanized in the usual manner.
