Abstract

7408. Hummel, J. Dec. 27, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Variable-speed gearing.-Relates to a variablespeed friction driving-gear particularly applied to machines for beating the whites of eggs, cream, &c. Upon the vertical shaft 14 is slidably keyed a friction pinion 5 which is driven by the large wheel 3. The disk wheel 3 fixed on the beltdriven shaft 1 is pressed into engagement with the friction wheel 5 by a spring 9, the pressure of which may be withdrawn for disengagement by turning the small hand-screw 6, when the coiled spring 12 comes into action. The vertical shaft 14 is supported at its lower end on the bracket 2 by a ball bearing in an annular casing 16. At its upper end it may be held by a conical steel pivot as shown in Fig. 3 or, as shown in Fig. 6, by a split truncated cone 18 which may be raised, to adjust for wear, by means of the bolts 20 lifting the plate 19. The keyed roller 5 is connected, by means of a ball bearing in a casing 21 fixed by screws 22 to a cup 23, to a tubular screw 24, which is caused to travel longitudinally by operation of the hand-wheel 25, rotatable in the fixed bracket 26 and forming a nut for the screw, thus serving to move the pinion across the face of the disk 3 to effect a change in the speed at which it is being driven.
