Abstract

5853. Tingley, E. M. March 17,1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Casings; cooling and ventilating.-An enclosed machine is provided with a fan on the armature shaft and ventilating passages in the laminµ. The armature is built up of groups of laminµ 3 with passages 4 between the groups which are supported in a frame 5. This frame is connected to the enclosing casing 6 by webs 7, thus providing annular air passages 8. The groups of laminµ are clamped between end plates 11, and the armature coils 12 are wound in longitudinal slots. The rotating field magnets have passages 13 adjacent to the shaft 14, and also other transverse passages 15. The ends of the passages 13 are partly covered by end bells 16, and on the shaft 14 in front of these is placed a fan 17 to force air through the machine. The end bells 19 enclose air spaces 20, 22 with inlets 21 at the bottom of the machine which communicate with the passages 13 &c. by the aperture 24 in which the fan blades rotate. An annular chamber 27 is formed round the shaft by depressing the end of the casing and fixing a coverplate 26. A tube 28 connects the chamber 27 to the machine chamber, which is at a higher pressure and so prevents the ingress of air around the bearings. When the machine is running, air is drawn in at the aperture 21, and after passing through the various passages as shown by the arrows is expelled through the openings 9. Air is forced through the tubes 28 and emerges between the plate 26 and the shaft 14. To avoid noise in the room, the openings 21, 9 are in communication with the outside air through openings in the floor, or with other source of pure air.
