Abstract

4978. Ainley, J. S. March 1. Gauze, leno, or cross-woven fabrics ; loom sheddiggmotions ; healds.- For cross-weaving, the doup healds are arranged somewhat in the manner described in Specification No. 908, A.D. 1874, in order that equal tension may be put on each crossing thread, and easing-motions may be dispensed with. Two top doups 1, 8 with plain healds 2, 7, and two bottom doups 4, 5 with plain healds 3, 6, are employed. The crossing thread A is threaded through the front top doup 1, crossed over the adjacent crossing thread B, and threaded through the back top doup 8, while the thread B is similarly threaded through the bottom doups 4, 5. The doups, which may be in the form of healds or harness cords, are raised and lowered independently according to the design to be produced, and any number of plain healds or harness cords may be employed to shed the ground warps. The threads A are crossed over one or more warps on the surface of the fabric, while the threads B are simultaneously moved across the back of the fabric in the opposite direction, so that the pattern is produced on both sides oE the fabric. By linking together healds which are raised and lowered simultaneously, such as the healds 1, 8 and 4, 5, six healds only may be used. Two or more sets of doups, each comprising two top and two bottom doups, may be employed. The doups may be of any ordinary construction, and the loops through which the doups work may be made of wire or worsted, or may consist of mails. A plain gauze weave is shown in Fig. 2, iu which the numerals denote the raised healds. In the Provisional Specification, it is stated that a variety of designs may be produced by the crossing warps similar to those usually produced by a weft, and the waste of silk or other special yarn, which has at times to be floated on the back of the fabric, is avoided ; also that the doups may be worked to produce, in conjunction with one set of crossing threads, small or filling points or spots, which are formed by the other crossing threads.
