Abstract

3771. Macnamara, J. Feb. 15. Couplings, automatic.-In a coup. ling - buffer for railway and like vehicles, the drawbar 3 is formed with a convex buffing-face 2 and with a splayed recess 4 in which is pivoted a coupling- bar 6 having a chisel-shaped front 8<a> and an upward projection 8, the latter being adapted to engage with a catch 9 pivoted at 10 in an opposing coupling-head. The catch 9 is held in the engaged position by a spring 11, which is mounted in a casing 12 formed on the catch and presses upwards, through the medium of a sliding washer 15, against a transverse bar 17 which is pressed to the top of slots 20 in the coupling-head by springs 19. A roller 13 at the top of the casing 12 normally rests in a notch 23 in the bar 17, but, when the catches 9 are raised for uncoupling, which is effected by moving the bar 17 sideways, the roller engages another notch 22. The handles 25 of the bar 17 may be pivoted at 26 and be fixed in either the folded or the extended position by pins 27. A book 7 may be provided under the coupling - bar 6 for non-automatic coupling. When desirable, the coupling-head may be made separate from the draw-bar, being connected thereto by pins 32, 33, Fig. 4, the former of which engages a hook 31 on the draw-bar, and may be removed to allow the coupling-head to hang vertically.
