Abstract

3541. Siemens Bros. &. Co., [Siemens- Schuckertwerke Ges.]. Feb. 13. Safety apparatus for use with electric conductors.- The waste water from a water jet earthing-device for a high-tension overhead electric installation is employed to cool, or itself serves as, the resistance in connexion with the excess-voltage safety devices. Water flows from the earthed nozzle a into the metal funnel b, which is connected to the line l, the water passing through the second funnel c, which is connected to the sparking-gap d, the water then flowing to ground. Since the section and length of the water jets can be adjusted, the resistance between c and earth can be made small compared with the other resistances. Instead of connecting the sparking-gap d to the line, it may be connected to earth. When water of very low conductivity is used, the water flowing from the nozzle is caught in a vessel g, Fig. 3, and is used by means of the electrodes h, k to form the resistance for the earthed sparking-gap, while the permanent connexion is maintained between the nozzle a and the vessel g. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the line-connected funnel dips into the insulated metal vessel g which is connected to the earthed sparking-gap, the water overflowing the vessel and keeping it cool.
