3532. Griffiths, H., and Wynn, W. L. Feb. 13. Brakes.-In an either-side wagon brake, means are provided for actuating the usual side lever a and for holding it in its operative and inoperative positions. The lever a is connected, by a chain &c. e, to a hand-lever b<1> on a cross-shaft c. An extension b<2> on this lever is adapted to engage a tail-piece f<1> on a pivoted rack f. When the hand-lever is operated to raise the lever a to apply the brakes, a spring h presses the rack into engagement with a projection a<1> on the lever a and holds this lever raised, as shown in Fig. 6. To release the brakes, the hand-lever b<1> is turned so that its extension b<2> slides down the tail-piece f<1> and withdraws the rack from the lever a, which falls in the guide g. The hand-lever is guided by a plate i. The other hand-lever may be at the opposite corner of the wagon.
