Abstract

3210. Love, W. Feb. 9. Embossing.-Relates to means for minimizing the deflection in pressure rollers for use in calendering &c. machines and to enable long thin truly cylindrical rollers to be employed instead of cambered rollers. The rollers a are, intermediate of their ends, provided with bearings b carried by one or more girders c supported on girders e, themselves supported by a girder g fixed by screws h. The girder g may be provided with links either slotted at the end or having a loosely-mounted ring to engage the end rollers so that they do not act as struts, and by rotation of the screws h the rollers can be separated. The bearing-surfaces of the bearing b are made adjustable by means of wedges p, Fig. 3, which by means of set-screws q can be advanced or withdrawn under the inclined surface s of a block m, which has mounted on it a pair of rollers n bearing on the pressure roller. Set-screws r are provided at the sides of the blocks to bear against the upper face at the lower flange of the beam c. The bearings b at each beam are equidistant from the abutments d, and the latter equidistant from the abutment h, and bending is prevented except the local bending between the bearings b. A single beam may be employed instead of two beams c or e, but in this case the position of the end of bearings b is varied. Figs 13, 15, and 16 show three of the many ways of arranging the bearings b, j, the girders c, g and the abutments d, h, and the'position of the bearings may be taken to give equal or unequal resistance ; in every case, however, the resistances are such that the roller a is equally deflected at each bearing.
