Abstract

2574. Phillips, T. E. R. Feb. 2. Winding-mechanism; maintaining power; stopmechanism.-A device for driving clock-work in an electric meter comprises a weighted lever 26, Fig. 2, which is pivoted at 28, and engages by a pawl 29 with a ratchet-wheel 30. When the lever falls, it completes the circuit of an electromagnet 27 by touching a contact 32 on the armature 33 of the magnet, whereupon the armature is pulled in and throws the lever up, breaking the circuit, and a spring 38 pulls the armature back again. The ratchet-wheel 30 rides loosely on the spindle 24, and drives it through springs 40, Fig. 12, connected to pins 41 carried by the spindle. A pawl pivoted at 28 prevents the ratchet-wheel from turning back. A device for stopping the clock-work when neither set of lamps is in use comprises an electro-magnet 45 in the main circuit, and a pivoted armature 47, carrying a spring piece the end of which is hook shaped and bears, when the armature is free, against a flat-sided attachment on the escapement, spindle. When the magnet is excited and attracts the armature, the spring piece gives the escapement a sharp turn, which starts the clock-work.
