Abstract

2230. Glasel, C. J. Jan. 29. Liquids, apparatus for treating with.-Hides and skins during the processes of depilation and tanning are stretched intermittently with the object of squeezing the spent depilating or tanning liquor from the pores of the hides and of allowing fresh liquid to enter. The rotary drums described in connexion with the invention are also provided with means whereby the liquid may be supplied and removed. A drum 20, Fig. 1, rotated by rollers 23 on shafts 24, is provided with an internal frame comprising three wheels 27, 28 connected by a shaft 30 supported in sockets 31 formed in removable heads 21 ; the frame is run into the cylinder on guideways 25. The hides A are secured to the wheels in a radial direction, and are strained by arms 37 secured to a sleeve 32 sliding on the shaft 30 ; the sleeve is also provided with an arm 34, Fig. 2, carrying a heavy weight 33 which, on the rotation of the cylinder, oscillates between the stops 35, 36. In a modification, the arms 37 are dispensed with and the two outer wheels are fitted with weighted hide supports adapted to have a limited movement of rotation in relation thereto ; or the intermediate wheel may be so fitted. In another modification, the hides are secured across the axis of the cylinder and pass between cross-bars of grid frames 43, 44, 45, Fig. 4. The hides are stretched by the grids 43, 45 being moved simultaneously in one direction while the grid 44 is moved in the opposite direction. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the hides are attached to bars 70, passing through radial slots in disks 72, 73, forming the ends of a cage which is driven faster than the cylinder by the pulley 75. The bars are moved outwards to stretch the hides by means of links engaging with cam - grooves 83 formed in frames 80, attached to the cylinder. The hides are simultaneously strained transversely by a grid 90 rotating with the inner cage and reciprocated by a pin 95 on a bracket 94 engaging a cam 96. The liquid may be supplied to, and removed from, the drum by a duplex pump 57,.Fig. 4, operated by eccentrics 58, 59 on the shaft 50. In another arrangement buckets dip into a tank and the liquid passes into the drum through valves opened and shut by suitable tappets. The liquid may be run out through apertures in the drum into a fixed annular chamber having a discharge port at the base. A fan 61, Fig. 4, driven from the pulley 62 may be used to force air into and out of the cylinder.
