Abstract
2045. Smith, H. A. E. Jan. 26. No Patent granted (Sealingfee not paid). Liquids, spreading in thin layers; evaporating white lead to dryness. White lead is dried between heated cylinders rotated and reciprocated axially. The pulpy material falls from a valved hopper e, through pipes e<1>, between the cylinders, and after drying is removed by knives f controlled by springs or weights f<1>, the knife blades also preventing any dried powder from escaping upwards with the vapour evolved. A casing c<x> further prevents escape of powder. The cylinders are shown as being rotated by spur gearing from belt pulleys d<3>, on the shaft of which is a pinion meshing with a wheel d<5> co-axial with a long pinion d<7>, which drives a wheel d<8> belonging to the lower cylinder and a wheel d<9> belonging to one of the upper cylinders ; the other upper cylinder is driven from the wheel d<9>. Reciprocation of the cylinders may be effected by providing on the cylinder shafts worms b<1> meshing with wheels b<2> carried by casings b<3> sliding on fixed bars b<4>; rods b<5> are connected to the frame of the machine and to eccentric pins on the wheels b<2>. Steam is supplied to the cylinders through pipes i jointed telescopically at i<1> and swivelly at i<2>; drain pipes i<3> and a steam trap i<4> may be provided. The dry material may be conducted direct into kegs or barrels, and the discharge aperture h may have a valve or shutter. The vapour evolved may be led from the upper part of the apparatus to a chimney.
