Abstract

908. Bailey, W. H. Jan. 12. Ventilating.-Fresh air for the ventilation of sewers &c. is supplied by a fan or blower h, Fig. 1, driven by wind-wheels i. The fan and windwheels are mounted in a casing provided with wheels running on a circular rail e, so that the front of the casing may be turned to face the wind. A V-shaped shield provided at the front of the casing directs the wind into V-shaped pockets l, by which it is concentrated on the wind-wheels i. The air escaping from the wind-wheels i is further utilized to turn larger wheels k, which are also driven directly by the wind and are connected to the wheels i by gearing o to assist in driving the fan h. The wheels k are mounted at the back of the casing and act as a rudder to turn the casing in the direction of the wind. When the wind is too strong, the gearing o is disconnected and the fan h driven by the wind-wheels i only. When there is no wind blowing, the casing g is held by bolts and the fan h driven by a motor a or by other suitable means. The air is driven down a pipe u, from which it is delivered by pipes w to the sewer or other place to be ventilated.
