Abstract

190,563. Marks, E. C. R., (Masters Manufacturing Co.). Oct. 3, 1921. Guarding against unauthorized use.-A steering-gear lock comprises a steering-wheel stub shaft carrying a gear in mesh with planetary gearing carried by the steering-shaft, a stationary housing having internal gear teeth with which the planetary gears mesh, a locking element rotatable with the steering-shaft, and means adapted to engage the locking element with the stationary gear teeth to lock the steering-shaft. As applied to the " Ford " type of steering-gear, the locking element 12 comprises a collar 13 rotatable on the hub 14 of a cap 3 and has depending'parts 15 between the planetary gears 8. The locking element may be raised by turning the key 26 of a barrel lock whereby a pin 27, engaging the locking element, is turned eccentrically raising the element and engaging teeth 16 thereon with the stationary teeth 11 of the steering-gear. Rotation of the planetary gears 8 about the steering-shaft 6 will be prevented by the fixed depending arms. Rotation of the cap 3 is prevented by forming a lug, not shown, on the lower part of the collar 13 so that in the raised position it lies between lugs on the cap 3. The key 26 is so arranged that it can be renoved only when the pin 27 is raised and the gear locked.
