Abstract

26,080. Shiels, A. Dec. 14. Gas and like engines, cooling cylinders of. The temperature of the cooling-water for engines used on motor road vehicles and for other purposes is kept constant by inserting a by-pass controlled by a thermostat in the circulating system. As shown in. the Figure, the cooling-water is leaving the cylinders by the pipes E', E and passing to the regulator A' through the independent pipe G and the cooler C to be returned to the cylinders through the pipe H. As the temperature increases, the supply of water entering the regulator through the pipe G is gradually cut off by the expansion of a flexible capsule or chamber A, containing a volatile liquid, which controls the sliding valve B. Should the ports b completely close, the whole of the water passes through the cooler C. Expanding rods or tubes may replace the capsule A.
