Abstract

25,956. Richards, E. P. Dec. 13. Skips, tip-boxes, and tip-buckets. -Relates to skips, tip-boxes, and the like of the kind described in Specification No. 23,625, A.D. 1903, and consists principally in constructing the suspending-bail or hanger so that it may be readily detached from the skip &c. Figs. 1 and 2 are respectively side and end elevations of the skip. The arms a, a' of the hanger are hinged on a pin b, and are provided with pivots g engaging sockets in the skip. The hanger is suspended from the crane by links e, e' connected to a yoke d so that the weight of the load tends to engage the pivots g in their sockets. A stop c is provided to limit the pivotal movement of the hanger arms. The skip is tipped by gravity on the release of a suitable catch, and is returned to the upright position by spiral springs h, one end of which is connected to the trunnion, and the other to a projection i<2> on the casing, which is rotated by engagement with a lug j when the skip is tipped. The preferred form of catch for holding and releasing the skip comprises a hooked lever l pivoted to the hanger arm a, and engaging a projection l<1> on the box, the release being effected by a line m. This line is also used for guiding the box previous to discharging, and for this purpose is provided with a ring engaging a hook on the hanger, from which it is shaken loose when the box is to be tipped. The hooked lever l automatically re-engages on the return of the box to the upright position. In order to allow the line m, to be used for guiding purposes on the return journey of the empty box, means are provided for locking the lever l in the engaged position. A spring- controlled link o is hinged to the lever, and is provided with a pin engaging a zigzag slot in a plate p attached to the hanger. On the release of the hooked lever the pin traverses one arm of the slot and is retracted along the second slot by its spring, while, on the subsequent righting of the empty box, the lever l is again oscillated, and the pin traverses the second pair of slots, and is locked by springing into a hole in the hanger arm. To re-set the mechanism, the link o is returned to its former position by the handle o<3>, and the ring on the line m is replaced on its hook. According to the Provisional Specification, the box may be retained in the upright position by a pin passing through the hanger arm and into a socket in the box, and may be withdrawn by a spring-controlled lever pivoted to the hanger.
