Clocks combined with speed indicators.-Speed indicators for motor-cars &c. are combined with clocks in such a manner that the clock is continuously going, the speed indicator being brought into action when required, either by hand or automatically. The ratchet-wheel 25, Fig. 1, is fixed to an arbor of the clock-work, and rotates' continuously in the direction D. The clock-work is below the plate 2 and is not shown in the Figure, the dial 3 has additional graduations of miles or kilometres &c., and the pointer 8 for speed-indicating is rotated from the car &c. by gearing 4, 5, 6, 7, when a wheel 27 on the pinion 7 is free from the pawl 26, which is carried by a pivoted sector 19. This sector gears with a wheel 21 loose on the arbor of the wheel 25 and carrying pawls 23, which allow the wheel 21 to rotate freely in the direction C, but only to rotate the opposite way at a rate determined by the clock. By depression of a pin 16, the pawl 26 is freed from the wheel 27, and the sector 19 and wheel 21 are moved from their normal positions and are allowed to return at a. rate determined by the clock. The pointer 8 rotates until again stopped by the pawl 26 engaging the wheel 27; thus the distance travelled in a known time is obtained. In a modified form, the sector 19 is made in two parts which slide one over the other, and a nose on the sector engages the wheel 6 to stop the rotation of the pointer.
