Abstract
22,798. Rawlinson, W. Nov. 7. Shearing.-Apparatus for use in removing the plates or sections from the knife bars of reaping and mowing machines and the like consists of a slotted block to support the knife and a tool to press upon the back of a section and cause it to shear the rivets. When in position, the knifebar rests on the block a, and the section c fits into the slot b and is held in place by a rib e or a set-screw. The tool f fits between a guiding-face b<1> and the knife section c, and is actuated by a hammer. It is formed with a ledge f<1> to engage the section c, and a second ledge f<2> to engage the bar d and prevent too great a descent. The face of the tool may be recessed at f<3> to pass over raised rivet heads, and a chamber may be formed at a' to receive the detached sections. The block may be provided with a hole l for punching out rivet ends and with means for riveting on the sections, and may be attached to a knife sharpening apparatus, a bench, or any other support. In a modification, the tool slides in guides in a standard and is actuated by a lever through the medium of an eccentric and link or other device. In another modification, the knife head d rests in a groove and the sections c are horizontal. In another form, a long block is mounted on legs and provided with clamps so that it may support the knife while it is being sharpened.
