Abstract
22,773. Lodge, A. H. Nov. 7. Ball and float v a l v e s; casings; valves closing with rush of fluid ; lift valves; repairing, facilitating. - Relates to a subsidiary valve applicable to a ball or lift valve, by which the flow of water is automatically stopped when the parts of the valve are removed for repair. Fig. 2 shows a ball, valve in which the sliding plug b, actuated by the ball lever d, seats against the tank side of a partition c. A central opening through this partition receives the sliding stem a<3> of a rubber-faced valve a<2>, which is urged by water pressure in the chamber a<1> in the direction of the plug b. The stem is of sufficient length to keep the valve a<2> off its seating c<3> when the ball-valve plug b is at its maximum distance off its seat, but closes entirely when the plug b is removed altogether. The Provisional Specification states that the stem a<3> takes against a metal stud in the centre of the rubber-faced plug b. Fig. 4 shows the same principle applied to a bib cock, in which the spindle of the main plug b is held in sockets in a spindle d above and the subsidiary valve a<3> below. The plug b can be rotated off its seat for ordinary purposes without stopping the flow, but, on rotation of the spindle d out of the casing, the valve head a<2> seats on the ring shown and is held there by fluid pressure from below.
