Loading and unloading; derricks. - Derrick-like loading and discharging apparatus for vessels, of the kind described in Specifications Nos. 4063 and 27,760, A.D. 1904, is so constructed that inboard or outboard swinging of the spars about their p i v o t s effects the raising and lowering of the load relatively to the beam from which it is suspended. The derrick spars b are connected by a cross - beam a, from which a cradle is suspended by ropes 1 passing round drums 4. The drums 4 are integral with drums 5 to which are attached the ends of oppositelywound ropes 6. The ropes 6 pass round lower and upper sheaves 79, 80, and their other extremities are attached to eyes 81. The beam a follows a circular path C, Fig. 3, as the spars b swing on their pivots d from an inboard to an outboard position or vice versa. The effect of this swinging movement is to vary the distance between the sets of sheaves 79, 80 in such a way that, as this distance diminishes or increases, the drums 5 wind in or pay out the ropes 6 under the action of the load, and the multiple purchase is transmitted to the load by the drums 4 unwinding or winding and lowering or raising the load a corresponding amount relative to the beam a as shown by the curved path D, Fig. 3. By this means, luffing with any desired vertical transport of the load can be effected in one operation. The ropes 6 may be directly connected to the load and so guided as to permit the swinging of the load between them.
