Abstract

Furnaces.-In a roasting or desulphurizing furnace having superposed shelves and a central, vertical air-cooled shaft carrying stirring-arms, a chamber is provided above the furnace so that ores, such as " washed Spanish fines," containing a large amount of moisture maybe dried by radiant heat and hot air from the shaft before being introduced into the furnace. To prevent hot gases from escaping from the furnace, the central shaft 6 is formed with a flange 10 entering a concentric gutter 11 in the top arch 2. The upper end of the shaft passes into the drying-chamber 12, and is provided with a split collar 16 having a grooved flange 18, in which rests the lower end of a dampered stack 19. Each half of the collar 16 has an extension to which is bolted an arm 22, Fig. 3, carrying stirrers 23. The material, which is fed from a hopper 15 to the drying-chamber 1, is discharged therefrom by a screw 27 working within a duct 24 arranged below the stirrers. By closing a damper 20, hot air from the shaft 6 may be passed through a blast fan or blower 29 and introduced into the drying-chamber. Gas from the furnace is discharged through an opening 42 in the side wall to the main outlet flue 44.
