Abstract
20,500. Hatfield, H. S., and Reason Manufacturing Co. Oct. 10. Quantity meters.-In mercury electrolytic meters, an electrolyte consisting of a double salt, or of two or more salts, is employed. One salt is always a mercuric salt of the following group, namely, HgCl2, HgBr2, HgI2, Hg(CNS)2. The other salt or salts are chosen from combinations of any one metal or radicle more electro - positive than mercury, e.g. ammonium, with an acid radicle of the group Br, I, CNS. The non-mercuric part of the electrolyte is employed in sufficient excess to dissolve any mercuric salt formed at the anode, but the excess should not be sufficient to allow of crystallization at the cathode. The solution preferred is the double iodide ¢ HgI2. 5 KI, expressed in gramme-molecules per litre. The solution is purified, before filtration, by shaking with French chalk and allowing to settle, whereby flocculent impurities &c. are removed. These solutions are applicable for use with iridium cathodes, as described in Specification No. 20,770, A.D. 1905. In the Provisional Specification, further components are described, consisting of Hg(CN)2 and HgS on the one hand, and combinations containing the radicles Cl, CN, S on the other.
