Abstract

19,548. Trewhella, B., and Trewhella, W., [trading as Trewhella Bros.]. Sept. 27. Lifting-jacks.-Relates to hauling or lifting. ratchet jacks, and consists principally in arrangements for controlling the action of the pawls. The casing 1 is adapted to slide along the rack-bar 2, and either of these parts may be operated by the pivoted hand-lever 3, the other part remaining stationary. Two pawls are used, the operating- pawl 4 being pivoted to the lever 3, while the retaining-pawl 5 is mounted between lugs on the casing. Both pawls are, during lifting, kept in contact with the teeth by a spring 11, which is attached to a vertical spindle 12 at its lower end, while the other en I is secured to a rod 14 bearing against the back of the upper pawl, and pivotally mounted on a pin 16 on the lower pawl. An inclined rib 17 is formed on one side of the operating-pawl to engage, during lowering, a bevelled arm 18 formed on a small lever secured to the spring spindle 12. A lateral arm is also provided on the lower end of this spindle to engage the projecting end of the pin 16. These parts are kept out of engagement during the lifting operation by a lever or cam-piece 20, hinged to an arm 21 on the spindle 12, and adapted to engage a plate secured to the casing. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan showing the parts arranged for lowering, and Fig. 4 shows the lever 20 in position for lifting, the bevelled piece 18 being withdrawn from the path of the inclined rib 17. When lowering, the pawls are engaged alternately with the rack, the lower one being pressed out of engagement when the weight is being taken by the operating-pawl 4. The casing is provided with the usual claw foot 26, within which a roller 25 is mounted to reduce friction. A removable extension rod 28 is socketed in the foot 26. The upper end of the casing has a pair of lateral projections 29, supported by side flanges in which bolt-holes are provided to enable the casing to be secured to a rigid support. The lower ends of the casing and the rack-bar are each provided with eyes &c. from which suitable hooks are suspended.
