A backing for glass tiles consists of a mixture of 7 parts of ground calcined magnesite, 4 parts of concentrated sodium silicate solution, 3 parts of precipitated silica, and 3 parts of manganese dioxide. While the coating is soft, pottery chips or the like are sprinkled over it and pressed in to form a key for fixing the tile to walls, ceilings, &c. by means of the above composition or other suitable cement.
